Debating

Mungret Community College began their Concern Debate Competition year with a narrow loss (3-1) to Patrician High School Monaghan proposing the motion "School Strikes are the only effective way for young people to have a voice on climate change". Mungret's team of Imran Wazif Modh Ariri, Holly Meaghar, Aidan Moriarty and Anna Fatyga were very unlucky against an experienced Monaghan side.

In their second debate, Mungret successfully opposed the motion "Feeding the world is increasingly beyond humanity's reach" in a majority 3-1 verdict against St Joseph's College, Borrisoleigh, Thurles. Mungret benefited from the expert mentorship of Ms Niamh McCormack this year. The successful team was made up of Nelli Rasko, Sam Buckley, Conor Shelley and Sophie Mulcahy.

In the final debate of the Concern Debate League Phase, Mungret was unanimously victorious on the motion "Big business is indifferent to the Sustainable Development Goals." Nelli Rasko, Hannah Martin, Adona Sunil and Sam Buckley were successful representing Mungret against Presentation Brothers College, Cork. The speakers are pictured with the wider team, with special thanks to Maja Prokop who acted as timer through the competition. Missing from the picture is Ian Wojtowicz who acted as chairperson and Adona Sunil. Other Transition Year students, including Aga Hourigan, Joris Petrulevicius, and Raymond Yu, helped in researching for the competition. Thanks are also due to former Mungret Concern competitor Eoghan Hinchy, who acted as mentor to the team. With 9 points across three League debates, Mungret wait to see if they make it into the next round in 2025.
