Assessment is a key part of any worthwhile learning programme. The emphasis is on varied and on-going assessment, with students themselves becoming involved and recognising their own learning strengths and weaknesses. A variety of assessment techniques, such as project and research work, personal presentation and practical activities, is encouraged to enable all students to demonstrate their learning and growth throughout TY.
In Mungret Community College students are assessed at the end of each module studied. A report will be sent home at the end of each module. The report will be both formative (helps students to better understand their strengths and weaknesses and to identify target areas that need work through the use of teacher feedback, and summative ( final grade awarded based on the student’s work/ project/ engagement/ practical work over the 6 week learning block.
Overall assessment in Transition Year is based on a credits system. Students are assessed at the end of each module studied. There will be two academic reporting periods through the year, one at Christmas and the other at Summer. These reports will be both formative (helps students to better understand their strengths and weaknesses and to identify target areas that need work through the use of teacher feedback), and summative (final credit awarded based on the student’s work over the module learning block).
Certificates are awarded according to the credits accumulated throughout the year in the following grading system:
Participation: 0 - 200 credits
Pass : 201 - 400 credits
Merit : 401 - 600 credits
Distinction : 601 - 800 credits

Transition Year Eportfolio:
Here at Mungret Community College, we place great importance on e-learning and using this resource as an additional learning tool in the classroom. All TY students will have their own chromebook with which they can engage with online learning through each school day and at home.
Throughout the year students will complete an e-portfolio which showcases their learnings, experiences and reflections from their year in TY. It is in effect an electronic diary of their year, and to assist with this students will have 2 timetabled periods each week for e-portfolio. Students are encouraged to use a variety of media to showcase the activities and learning they have engaged with throughout the year. They will use this platform to also reflect on their TY experience. Portfolios will be assessed and awarded credits at the end of the year.
