Record Medal Haul At Munster Schools

he Munster Schools Athletics Championships is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the schools athletics calendar. With straight finals and only two athletes to qualify for the All Ireland Schools in June, the stakes are always high.

Niamh Hynes got the day off to a terrific start with a lifetime best in the 300m hurdles final.

Ivana O’ Carroll had a super run in the Senior Girls 400m which was one of the fastest races of the day.

Jake Barkley clinched a super silver medal in the Junior long jump with a fine leap of 5.19m.

Raymond O’Brien took a tremendous win in the Junior boys shot putt and followed that up with a fine 4th place finish in the Junior discus.

Meabh Purtill finished 3rd in the Senior girls 200 and won a very impressive senior long jump with a final round jump of 5.37cm.

Emer Purtill set not one but two new Intermediate Munster Schools records - the only 2 records broken on the day. Emer launched the shot putt out to an impressive 14.80m+ throw and fired the Javelin in excess of 44m. Emer has now secured qualification for the Tailteann Games where she will battle it out for a place on the Intermediate Schools International Team.

Well done to our athletics team who claimed a super second place at the annual LCETB sports day in Newcastle West. They brought home the plate for the second year in a row, missing out on the victory by 1 point. Brilliant to see 51 students participating across a wide range of events.

Congrats to Meabh and Emer Purtill who competed for Ireland at the schools International combined events in Glasgow.

Emer produced a brilliant performance to take individual gold with a pb of 3578 points and taking Ireland to silver in the junior girls team event.

Meabh also had a great day helping the Intermediate girls secure another gold for Ireland in the team event.

It is only the 4th time that there has been two athletes from the same school on the schools international in the same academic year.

At the Munster School Combind Events Emer won the junior age group with a new Munster record. Meabh finished a brilliant third in a very competitive intermediate.

Robert Purtill finished 8th in minor and was a year out of age.
