Mungret Community College Captain Cian Reilly receives the cup from Limerick Post Primary Schools Development Officer Eamonn Phelan.
The scene was set at Mick Neville Park Rathkeale as a strong breeze emerged for the encounter between Mungret Community College and Tralee CBS ‘The Green’. When the ball was thrown in, Mungret started strong. Jamie Byrne won countless possessions in the first half from the middle of the field, showing determination and a desire to drive his team forward. Sam Roche opened the scoring with a long range effort landing over the bar. Following this, the Kerry men really settled into the game, landing a range of points in quick succession. Their use of the ball was extremely clever as they created many scores. Mungret struggled to close them down resulting in two first half goals for Tralee. Momentum was starting to build for Tralee, however, with fifteen minutes to go in the first half, Mungret began to reduce the deficit.
Thomas Slavin converted three difficult frees, while Josh Rohan was extremely unlucky for a goal. His effort was saved by the goalkeeper and it landed over the bar.
At half time the score was Mungret Community College 0-8 Tralee CBS ‘The Green’ 2-8. Tralee would have been content with their first half performance. Their attacking play was effective as their forwards used the ball very well. It was all to play for in the second half.
In the second half, Mungret started the strongest. Sean Walsh secured countless possessions on the wing and won frees that were converted by Thomas Slavin. Shortly later, centre forward Mark Neligan scored a great goal. His low shot proved tricky for the goalkeeper to save. Following this, Thomas Slavin scored a fantastic goal. This gave Mungret great belief to turn the tide. He later converted three more frees. One of these frees was won by Eoghan Hardiman who made a tremendous impact off of the bench. As the game progressed, Eoghan scored a super point off of his left hand side to send Mungret Community College in the driving seat. At this stage of the game, Mungret were ahead by five points which looked like a promising outcome. The Mungret defence defended heroically. This was led by full back and captain Cian Reilly who emerged with many possessions from the full back line. Jack Houlihan was immense in the half back line throughout the whole game. He attacked the ball at speed, winning numerous possessions and delivering lots of possession into the full forward line. Josh Rohan continued to cause problems for the Tralee defence. Conal Leenane caught a great ball in the second half and made some great clearances towards the conclusion to help his side to sustain their lead. However, the momentum of the game took a turn for the worse. In the last five minutes, Tralee scored two great goals in quick succession. This meant that the Kerry men were ahead by one point. It seemed that they were going to clinch the title. Rather than lamenting on the goal, Sean Moriarty showed great focus and determination. Straight away, he picked the ball up out of the net and struck it up the field as fast as he could. The ball broke over the half back line and was won by the danger man Eoghan Hardiman. On a solo run, he turned his marker, side stepped the full back and hand passed the ball across the square. As the ball travelled along the ground, Sam Roche was waiting in anticipation. He pulled on the ball and his effort rifled the back of the Tralee net. This goal was the final play of the game which meant that Mungret Community College won the game by two points and became U15C Limerick County Champions for the first time. Mungret Community College defeated Tralee by showing resilience, grit and determination. They fought extremely hard for every ball, forced many turnovers and closed down the Tralee players in possession. This made it extremely difficult for Tralee to win possession and use it wisely like they did in the first half. Not only are this team the current U15 Munster Hurling Champions, they are now County Champions and are undefeated. Well done to all of the panel members and to the management involved.

U15 Munster Hurling Final
Mungret Community College 2-10 1-10 Boherbue Comprehensive School
Well done to the U15 Mungret Community College hurling team who won the John
Stack Munster Hurling Title at The Bog Garden in Rathkeale, defeating Boherbue
Comprehensive School. It was a very close encounter. Boherbue started strong,
scoring a goal and a number of points in quick succession. Mungret responded well
with a great goal from Josh Rohan. Thomas Slavin scored an important free to
reduce the deficit. At half time, Mungret trailed by five points. They finished the first
half well. Cian Reilly came out the field winning great ball in the full back line while
David Lynch, Eamonn Lyons, Conall Leenane, Jack Houlihan and Paddy Ahern
showed great determination in defence.
Mungret Community College knew they needed a massive effort to win this game. At
the beginning of the second half, Conall Leenane caught a great ball near the
dugout, which was received by a great roar from the Mungret supporters. Following
this, Mungret rallied scoring five inspirational points in a row. Jamie Byrne scored
two fantastic scores from long range. This built great momentum for Mungret CC.
Robert Purtill at midfield scored a fantastic point, shooting high and landing over the
bar. A great score for the First Year student. Mark Neligan showed fantastic
leadership, scoring a super point on the sideline which instilled great belief in the
Mungret CC team. Thomas Slavin and Sam Roche worked tirelessly, making
countless runs up and down the pitch. Sam Roche retreated to support the half back
line and caught great ball, delivering it long into the inside forwards. Thomas Slavin
scored two extremely significant frees which put Mungret Community College ahead
by one point. Sean Walsh worked extremely hard on the wing throughout the game
and showed great heart winning countless possessions. Jack Houlihan gave an
exhibition at half back, winning the ball on numerous occasions. His blocking,
hooking and clearances proved crucial. Boherbue brought their corner forward out to
the middle of the field. This meant that Eamonn Lyons had to play an alternative role.
This worked to Mungret's advantage as Eamonn secured a number of possessions.
A massive score came towards the end of the game.
With Mungret CC ahead by a
point, Josh Rohan was on the attack, he hand passed a ball across the square.
Everyone expected Conall Boyle to catch it but to our surprise instead he showed
fantastic skill in striking the ball in mid air reaching the top left hand corner of the net.
The crowd erupted. It was a fantastic goal, something you would see on the Sunday
game. What a finish. Boyle celebrated and Mungret CC were in the driving seat with
a four point lead. This gave the Limerick men great momentum and proved to be a
key moment in the game. With time running out, Boherbue scored a point from a free, creating a tense finish.
Sean Moriarty made a great save in the closing stages of the game. This helped Mungret CC stay three points clear of their opponents. In
the final play, the Cork side lobbed the ball in, but the centre back, Paddy Ahern
came out with the ball securing victory for Mungret Community College.
Aherne gave an exceptional display at centre back, marking a very skillful centre
forward. He won this battle, showing hard work and determination. Cian Reilly
provided a masterclass at full back, attacking the ball and breaking the tackle each
time. Every player on the pitch was phenomenal. History was made at The Bog
Garden as this group became the first ever panel at Mungret Community College to
win a Munster Hurling Title. Each panel member made a huge contribution to the
victory. A squad that epitomised sheer determination, grit, resilience and amazing
character. They have become great champions. Unbeaten all year, winning every
game that they have played. They have trained extremely hard, putting in a serious
effort every night at training. Their coaches Mr. Whelan, Mr. Devereux, Mr. Carmody
and all of the school community are extremely proud of this group. What a day.

Munster Senior Hurling Finalists 2024

The Senior Hurling team had a great run at the hurling championship this year. They reached their first ever Munster final, however, agonisingly missed out on the win in the final minutes of added time. They still continue in the Limerick championship to gain some silverware before the years out.
