The Gaelbhratach Awards 2025 took place in Mary I on Tuesday the 13th May. Our 3rd year students who lead our committee attended to collect our award for the promotion of the Irish language within the school. The committee have worked very hard this year to organise events in the school through Irish, organised a very successful seachtain na Gaeilge, and organise their weekly tae agus plé sessions in A1-18.

Our students took to the stage to collect their award, and were pleasantly surprised to find out they had also been awarded an individual award for 'promoting Irish within the school environment'. Over 63 schools attended the event and only 6 schools were awarded a special reward to recognise their outstanding work in 2025.

More information about the Gaelbhratach:

We support schools throughout the country to promote the Irish Language through continuous communication, the creation and dispersion of resources, and a wide range of initiatives. When schools complete certain targets, they are awarded a Gaelbhratach flag to proudly hang outside their school. The students take ownership of the scheme: the ideas, the planning and the results.Student committees are given training to organise events for their school communities, all with the aim of promoting Irish as a living language. The Gaelbhratach scheme was established in response to the need to create natural opportunities to speak Irish outside of the formal classroom setting. The scheme officially began in the 2012/13 school year at primary level and at secondary level the following year. In the years since, the scheme has worked with every kind of school in all corners of the country – from both urban and rural schools seeking to breathe new life into Gaeilge, to Irish-medium and Gaeltacht schools where it is spoken as the main language every day.

What is the Gaelbhratach club?

Gaelbhratach Club gives students the opportunity to speak Irish outside of the formal classroom setting. Our wonderful student committee is made up of both boys and girl from 1st to 6th year. The committee is in charge of organising events, running the events and promoting Irish around the school. The committee decided on two main aims for 2024/2025. The first was to increase the visibility of Irish around the school and the second was to increase the amount of students and staff who speak Irish outside of the classroom setting. Mungret Community College was awarded the Gaelbhratach flag for 2024 and will soon be receiving the 2025 flag for the committee's efforts with their targets and actions this year.

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025:

This year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge was a resounding success, taking place during the week of March 10th. The Irish Department worked together to organize a variety of events, including "Tae agus Plé" for 2nd year students, céilís for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students, a poster competition for 1st years, and daily intercom announcements encouraging both students and staff to incorporate Irish into their everyday conversations.

The week was a great success, with both students and staff making a conscious effort to speak more Irish and immerse themselves in the language, music, and culture.
