On March 21st the school community celebrated World Down Syndrome Day. It is celebrated on this day because individuals with Down Syndrome have 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. As chromosomes look like pairs of socks, people all around the world wear colourful socks to celebrate and advocate for the amazing people in their lives with Down Syndrome. When children with Down syndrome and other disabilities are given opportunities to join in, all children benefit from this and environments of friendship, acceptance, respect for everyone and high expectations are created. The day gives us an opportunity to recognise that we are all different, that’s what makes us all unique.

Along with other schools in Limerick, staff and students in Mungret Community College donned their colourful and odd socks with a prize for the most colourful tutor group. The staff and transition year students organised a coffee morning and bake sale. The proceeds from the bakesale and from donations have raised over €500 for our local Down Syndrome charity, Down Syndrome Limerick.
A huge thank you to the following Transition year students for their help in organising the event: Claire O’Sullivan, Noor Waad Jassim, Claire O Sullivan, Tara Healy, Jack Meaney, Rachel Reeves, Nadia Rongiers and Markuss Edijs Pliesmanis.
